Gilded Age Politics-timeline 1881 Assassination of James Garfield: Charles J. Guiteau felt he deserved a diplomatic post for his speech ?Garfield vs. Hancock? which he felt was integral in Garfield?s win in the close election of 1880 over Winfield S. Hancock. When it became apparent that Guiteau would not get a position, he felt compelled by God to kill Garfield which he did with a pistol.
