There were two main causes that resulted in China and Japan having contrasting destinies. Both nations were subjected to the same growing pressure from Western powers, yet they responded in two opposite ways. China adhered to their traditional social structure and economy, whereas Japan underwent reforms from above, and developed industry and a powerful military. The other factor that resulted in the two nations opposing destinies was the variation military stability.
