The Reign of Louis XIV ? Background 1559 King Henry II died, leaving 4 sons. Their mother, Catherine de M?dicis ruled behind the first 3 schild and showed incompetent. Catherine tried t preserved royal authority, but grow conflicts between Catholics and Huguenots (French Protestant) rocked the country. ? 1562 and 1598 Huguenots and Catholics fought 8 religious war. Chaos spread over France. ? ? Religious Wars and Power Struggles 1572 St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre (in Paris) sparked a six week nation-wide slaughter of Huguenots. Many Huguenots were in Paris for the marriage of Catherine's daughter to a Huguenot's prince, Henry of Navarre. Most noble died except Henry (a robust, athletic, and handsome guy) Henry of Navarre
