If anybody can help please do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why did the late-nineteenth century elections tend to focus on the personalities of the candidates rather than on the "real" issues? What were the requirements for election to high political office in the 1870's and 1880's?
In this time period, it is best to remember that the average American was not concerned with the 'big picture'. Unlike modern elections, the main issue for the voters was whether or not the candidate was personable. This is the reason why a scandal-ridden candidate like Ulysses S. Grant was re-elected. Also, the issues weren't very diversified. The Civil War had just ended, so the major issue (for the first part of 1870's) was Reconstruction. Once that had ended, it was who could best navigate the Gilded Age.
