DBQ due monday Chesapeka region HELP!!!

Although New England and the Chesapeake region were both settled largely by people of English origin, by 1700 the regions had evolved into two distinct societies. Why did this difference in development occur?

wow, my class just went over the info we could get from all the documents in this DBQ.. it IS the 1993 DBQ, isn't it?

if it IS:
Document A:
Stuff about Puritans, Covenant of Works/Covenant of Grace, "City Upon A Hill"
Pretty much stuff about Puritan theology.

Document B:
Came in families, therefore probably middle class; from ubran society, so they form an urban society;possibly fleeing religious persecution; lotsa more puritan stuff

Document C:
No Children (meaning no next generation)
Few Women
Possibly orphans
indentured servants?
indentured servants leads to headright system
people would be pretty rich of pretty poor.. = would be divided economically
tryingn to make estates? (only the first son could inherit in england.. 2nd sons want their own)

Document D:
look at date.. 1636: probably during great migration
they're literate
it's a covenant
people are writing the gov't, not a king
democracy-ish (south was hierachy-ish, by the way.. rich people had estates and made decisions and what not)
equality (families,...rich and poor)

Document E:
Plantations in south (and we know trade was in the north)
plantations require slaves + indentured servants
trade does not

Document F:
um, i'm looking at my notes, and they don't really make sense to me..

Document G + H:
Berkeley + Bacon = Bacon's Rebellion, duh.
-led to lotsa slavery and such... slavery drastically changed population and had an effect on culture and what nots.

pretty much...
the different ideas behind settling the land led to the different societies.. i think
new england = religion
chesapeake = money and such wonderfulness stuff like that.

i know this whole this is probably not making much sense.. i'm sorry, it's late and i have to go read some apush.

i just did this same question for my first dbq last week in ap us. i got an 81 on it, which i dont mind since it was my first one ever.
anyway, i ended up using all of the documents and i repeatedly used... i think it was doc g.
its pretty much the idea that the chesapeake region was more focused on tobacco and such where as the NE colonies were more focused on planning for the winter. the ches region was mostly single white men whereas the NE colonies were mostly families. um... NE had rocky soil whereas the ches region had more fertile soil. that kinda thing. hope this helps! :p

Somethings you want to consider: Motivations for settlement and pattern of settlement for both regions.

wow do I wish I came to this forum last week. We got the same DBQ and got a 4 on it (out of 9). It was our first DBQ. I hated it because the only documents I could really get anything from/understood was B and C with the lists of people.

I wrote that very same DBQ last week! I dont know how I did on it but I separated it into ecoomic, political, and social differences, if that helps. And my teacher has 2 rules: 50/50 and 50+1.....50/50 means use half of the info provided and half of the outside info you know and 50+1 means use half the documents plus one more. I dont know if that helps you any but everyone else basically summed it up (at least how I wrote it)

Here's some comments from my teacher that was on my DBQ:

DBQ called for:

Motives (a,b,c)
comp. of groups (if you can figure out what comp. stands for because I forget - E, G, H)
forms of government (D-H)

Hope that helps.

That was our summe DBQ that we did, I got a 10 out of 15, but we covered it in super depth after. The main idea is motivation. That was the big determining factor in why the changes occured. Take into consideration the different people who founded each area (Northern-Families, Southern-single men) also the affects the small governments of each area and how they were run. But again the biggest idea is motivation, that is the most important idea.
