Madison and Jefferson

i have a dbq where it asks about Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, and the federalist and democratic-republican parties, it wants to know about each of their political view points and how they changed when they become president.
my friend thought Madison was a federalist, but i know he isn't. what ive gathered is that he is democratic-republican but supports a strong central government which is why he helped write the Federalist papers. is this correct?

It's also why he supported the creation of the national bank while jefferson opposed it.

I did a major project on the federalists about 3 years ago for an 8th grade history course.
