Since there was some discussion about the Patriot Act at the end of another thread, I thought that I would take the liberty of starting this thread.
Is the Patriot Act infringing on civil liberties, or is it a good policy in helping the war on terrorism? You tell me...

I believe that the patriot act is a major threat to our civil liberties in that there is no due cause. The things that you may say can be taken out of context and used to throw you in jail because you "may" be a threat to national safety!
I think it's a good idea that the government took too far. I mean, yes I think there should be tighter security at airports and the like and that the government should be able to survey activity in crowded places, but do they really need to know what books I'm reading? Do they really need to listen in on my phone conversations because I said one specific word? I certainly don't think so...

Has anyone here actually been persecuted or know someone who was under the Patriot Act? If not, how do you know that the government is surveying "what books you buy" or your phone conversations? If you're asking yourself "Does the government really need to know _____ ?" the likelihood is that they don't.

The Patriot Act took things way too far. I don't see where this irrational fear that terrorists are roaming around everywhere came from.
Also, it's the government's fault anyway, Bush was best friends with Osama..
I mean, c'mon...
Best friends?
Evidence? (Real evidence not "I heard..." and not from some conspiracy theory website)

I don't know of any of these websites you speak of, but I know from articles I have read in newspapers and heard in the news.
Don't you find it a "bit" curious that Osama and his family were flown out of the US exactly the same day the terrorist attacks happened? While all airports were closed, a few (2 or 3) flights were permitted with Osama and, if I'm not mistaken, Sadam's relatives. Also, Bush Senior has bene photographed with Osama's father, and there is evidence to prove that they were good friends and had many deals on oil, etc.
If you don't know about it it's because the CIA does a good job of hiding all evidence.
Haha. Conspiracy stikes again. Those darn CIA guys.
Correction: Members of Osama's family (as in not Osama himself, no way he would be allowed in country. Also it wasn't even members of his immediate family, it was cousins, uncles, and others. Many who make that argument tend to leave out details like that) were flown out of country for exactly that reason. The day of the attacks it was impossible to be sure Osama was behind it. Holding members of his family in the US would be a serious violation of Habeas Corpus and since at the time there was nothing definitive to say Osama was behind it, those members of his family were flown out of country in the interest of protection.

...and Reagan gave WMDs to Saddam to help fight Iran. However, neither Bush Senior nor Reagan are President therefore making them irrelavent.
I would still appreciate a source of this evidence.

Okay, you cannot seriously tell me that you believe that Bush isn't seriously influenced by his father...

The issue most people have with the Patirot Act isn't that it gives the gov. more flexiblity in the war on terrioism, but that it gives them the right/capabilities of spying on your every move.

Not without probably cause. Just like any other crime investigation, a judge-approved warrant must be signed in order for the government to monitor certain activities.
