I'm kinda confused about how to answer that. Is there a certain category for the answers?
All I can say is that the union is the north: anti-slavery, economically diverse, urbanized, etc.
Confederate is the south: pro-slavery, mainly agricultural, disconnected, etc.
If you need anything clearer, just ask.

you know, the thing I find most interesting in your response was when you put slavery first on your list. Despite the common concensus and what they taught you in 8th grade, the civil war was over being able to quit the United States, not slavery. Just an interestign tidbit i figured id share.

Yeah, that's true. I guess I've been answering questions about slavery lately that it just popped up automatically.
I'm just sorta confused about time period.
Oh, and I meant to add that I know some very smart Canadians :D

so unions the north , confederate the south..
my apush teacher often talked about "tipping the balance" between the north and the south...i guess it's related to issues that concerns both of them...
does that mean there were same number of states both in union and in confederate?
GoPunchRocks, what do you mean by "civil war is being able to quit united states"??
also, how did voting system work back then??

Ok, I'm not too clear on all this cause I'm doing something else and it's the day before Thanksgiving, so I don't really feel like doing a lot of research.
The north and south thing- to start with it's The Union, not unions. You'll talk about those soon though I think. They're completely different though. I don't think that the Confederacy had an equal number, but less. My book says seven initially seceded to form the Confederacy, but I'm not sure about the rest. There were some states between the north and south that decided to stay neutral. I think they had a name, but I'm not entirely sure. The two sides did have advantages and disadvantages, which may have something to do with tipping the scales. I know that the north was much more economically diverse, better educated, and were better connected by railroads and such than the south, but the south had a greater number of people willing to fight with much gusto.
Okay, after much thought, I think I understand what GoPunchRocks is saying, but I have no idea how to tell you. So we're just gonna have to wait for him to post again.

"tipping the balance" often refers to the sectional control in Congress. that's why the admission of territories into the Union were very controversial upon deciding on slave status. The civil war was about "quitting the Union" goes back to the idea that the states constitute the Union or the idea of state sovereignty. basically the southern states believed they had voluntarily "joined" the Union and now they were voluntarily "quitting" the Union.
states that swayed on the issue were called border states because the indecision on their stand for slavery.
