the rich and famous...and the confused?!

one day i visited the post graduate center at my school, trying to find out majors...another girl came in cuz she had an appointment with the pgc counsellor.

she was talking to her about her college choices (i accidentally overheard :S)
and i kept hearing names like stanford and yales as if it was some easy school that one can coast into.

is it really like this? i mean, ive always thought of ivy schools as the special school, that in the states this kind of hierarchy (did i spell it right?) still exists...ivys for the supersmart and soon to be rich and famous, and the rest fall into..well, the rest of the group..

also ive had some dilemmas on my own when it came to ivy schools..

i felt as if i didnt get into a good school, a school where its name is easily recognized, i wouldnt feel like ive accomplished enough...

and now im reading this book called admission confidential, its about an account of a ex-admission officer trying to pick out kids for Duke.
they say if you're a BWRK--bright well rounded kid-- you're not good enough.

now im really scared...i mean i guess i have good grades...and participating in some activities and sports...but what if i'm not good enough to get into ANY "decent" school?

would anybody care to give me some advice on these kind of things, or at least calm me down and pat my shoulder?

maybe i ask too much of a thread.

Nothing is ever too much for a thread ;)

Just relax and take a deep breath.

I'm sure that you can get into many decent schools. There are some people that can talk about schools like that because of stuff like they've taken about ten or more AP test and have scored 4's and 5's on all of them and have been officers in like 5 clubs in high school and still manage to have a social life and maybe even a job. But obviously not everyone is like that. Honestly, those people annoy the heck out of me.

As for the Duke guy, don't let that phase you. Each school is looking for something different. Many are looking for forward thinkers, those that have new ideas or that see the world in a different way. Again, not everyone is like that. I'm not sure a school can function is everyone lives in their own world. All you have to do is do your best at school, try to join a few clubs and some leadership positions, and maybe do some community service. I find that schools really like that.

You seem like an intelligent person who studies hard and tries their best at everything they do. Just relax and stay the course. There will be plenty of "decent" schools who will take you, and I bet there will be ones better than those just plain "decent" schools too.

P.S. you did spell hierarchy right :p

Ivy Schools i think have just built up a reputation for being tough to get into, but its really not as bad as it seems. Do good on the SAT's 2200+, have a weighted GPA over like 4 or something...and do community service. And trust me if u get all of these 3 things, you are really likely to get into any good college.

MIT usually picks up one kid from every highschool (in jersey) every year...

Um, I'm not too sure about the over 4 GPA since 4 is the highest. Try to aim for about 3.75 or higher (A's and some B's...). But everything else said dbgt23 is basically right. Make sure you think about your interview too. You're interview is very important, but if you're a sophmore or a junior you don't have to worry about that for a while. If you want some tips just ask whenever you need.

Not ANOTHER stalker!! ;)

1. No idea. That sounds like a question for your counselor.

2. I don't think it matters. Both are challenging so the college will look at the fact that you rose to the challenge or the higher levels.

3. You have to register for the AP Exam through your school. They should announce it early next semester, well, at least at my school. Your teacher should tell you when to apply for it also. I'm not sure how it is at your school, but the fee for our first test is waived but each test after is $65 I think (I never had to pay it, my mom did).

Sports is a good way to get into colleges especially ivy league. College's look a lot at people who do sports because if they play for a certain college, that college gets money from that person playing for them. Scholarships are commonly given out to very good athletes. My friend graduated two years ago and just because he brought our team to the conference championsips for soccer three times and won two times, he got a full time scholarship to an ivy league college. It's ok if you dont want to do sports, I just recommend it. Clubs are a good alternative to sports.

Unweighted 4.33 is the highest :p. A "A" in an AP class is a 6 while a A+ is a 6.33.

1. Weighted GPA works like this, the harder classes you take the more credit you get.

Lets say there are 3 levels in ur school or w.e

-Standard level = if you get "A" it averages to your GPA as a 4 (4.33= A+)
-Advanced level = if you get "A" it averages to your GPA as a 5 (5.33= A+)
-Honors/AP level = if you get "A" it averages to your GPA as a 6 (6.33= A+)

So the tougher classes u take, the better ur weighted GPA is.

Now an unweighted GPA is one where it does not account to your level of classes. It just counts your GPA for all classes.

Lets say these are your classes:

-Standard level English "a+"....... {4.33} | (4.33)
-Advanced level History "a"........ {4} | (5)
-HONORS Math "b"................... {3} | (5)
-AP Science "b"....................... {3} | (5)

{So your average unweighted GPA would be like 3.7 for that year.}
(And your averge weighted GPS would be close to 4.8ish or so for that year.)

awesome! thank you all so much! so i guess theres weighted scale to give more credit to students that are taking hard courses..

APFaq, I DO play tennis, but i don't really think of myself as a future tennis player just yet...maybe i'll get better, but i think tennis and other clubs would help as well..

again, thanks to all of you! if anyone else have something to say please don't hesitate :)
