I'm surprised so many people hadn't heard of Guantanamo Bay reffered to as "Gitmo." The internet and news always refer to it as such.

Quote:1. Increases anti-American sentiment- Clearly, the WOT and GITMO has increased anti-American sentiment around the world. Terrorist attacks in Iraq everyday, and even protestors in the US that don't like the policy.
Just about everything will increase anti American sentiment nowadays. Most people are just jealous. So let's exlude this.

Quote:2. Hurts US credibility- The US is one of the nations that created the Geneva Convention to stop these kind of wartime violations. It sets up a bad example for the rest of the world since the US has somesort of leadership qualities still. If it is okay for the US to torture their POW's, why can't we torture US prisoners??
Ok, let me clear this up. The US is not torturing anyone. What is ocurring in Gitmo is barely abuse. Next, it's not POWs in Gitmo or else they would be protected by the Geneva convention. These are terrorists not POWs.
Quote:3. Hurts the WOT- Besides the increases in attacks, we aren't getting viable information from these prisoners. It has been proven that torture does not yield good results or information.
I hate it everytime I hear this rediculous argument. It does not hur the war on terrorism. Interrogating prisoners does not hurt the WOT. And going after terrorist groups doesn't increase terrorist attacks, it decreases them. What you are saying is that we should yied to the terroists and be good to them. At a certain level you are insinuating that we are the enemy. We should not appease terroists. The terrorists are not being tortured. Information fform abused prisoners is sometimes true, and that's really the best we're going to get form them. In the military the first thing they tell you is that if you are captured by the enemy, you will be tortured for information and you will eventually crack.
4. Torturing peole is bad- Obviously, torturing someone alone is bad enough, and that alone should be reason enough to shut GITMO down.
Again not turture.

So you admit it is abuse, though?

Oh yes, it's ok to abuse people being held without a trial. Yay!

Oh yes, once they're proven guilty it's perfectly alright to abuse them too.

No way, they're just terrorists. Life in Guantanamo Bay should be a nice paid vacation away from the stressful life of bombing infidels and plotting massacres. I mean, just because they murder civilians doesn't mean we should have any discrimination in their treatment in relation to the common criminal.

They're not even convicted, yet. So the rule of innocent until proven guilty doesn't apply?
