Oh crud, I should introduce myself, shouldn't I?

Hey all,

I'm Elaine (Elly, if you'd like,) a 15-year old Taiwanese born, Californian grown Chinese living in...China. The lovely city of Shanghai, y'know?

I'm only taking APUSH this year as a sophmore - the only one they'll let me take since I'm pretty math-challenged and am only in Alg2/Trig so I can't be in AP Calc and since I'm not taking the IB program, they won't let me take AP Gov this year. And AP Music just isn't something I'd be strong in, probably.

Anyways, I go to the Shanghai American School, I'm annoying-to-the-point-of-pouring-acid-on-your-face neurotic about grades (which my APUSH teacher never ceases to remind me, saying that if I burst into tears after a DBQ test again, she'll make sure she kicks me where a stomach ulcer is sure to develop and passes me around the class so I can get beaten by everybody) and I enjoy long, interesting films, literature like Les Mis and plotting to dress up as French revolutionary (Enjolras?) to terrorize the streets of Shanghai.

I don't do sports, I play flute/alto sax and I hope to someday volunteer overseas.

I don't like PE, celery, carrots, cilantro, Hilary Duff and doing things in front of other people - it makes me nervous beyond belief.
I do like hazelnut chocolate, candles, incense, most food, beaches and things that make me wax nostalgic.

And I'm longwinded, if you haven't noticed :)

Being long-winded isn't always a bad thing. Welcome! I know that you've posted some already, but hey, I was a member for months before I did my intro.

I totally agree with you on PE, cilantro, Hilary Duff, most foods, candles and incense. And Les Mis. I haven't read it yet (too long for my short time at the moment), but I have read an adapted version and it's my favorite musical. I just love the subtlety and the connections and, well, it's awesome.

I have a friend or two whose like you with the grades. APUSH is a good AP course. As for AP Music (I'm assuming it's AP music theory), well, they say that music and math tend to go together. Although the theory might not be that bad...

Anyways, welcome to the site and feel free to ask questions.

Yeah, it's AP Music Theory...I don't know. I used to love the music courses and then I got into the backstabbing world of high school band. Funny...the high school I almost went to in California had an AWESOME band where everybody's family and here...well, I want to kill half of the band for being useless pricks. Thus none of the music courses seem too appealing anymore =/

Les Mis is by far the best musical. Ever. Is it true they're stopping the Third Nat'l Tour? I've only seen it once in person.

Today my APUSH teacher took another jab at me:
"Hey, Ms Chernoff, can I check my grade so far?"
"You're not going to get out of this room without crying, are ya?"
"O.o"

But I ended up getting 98% as a quarter grade and 96% as a semester grade, minus the midterms. :)

Theory is just where you learn about chords and musical periods and different terms and stuff. And I COMPLETELY understand about you fellow band members. The chorus at my old school was really good, but here it's not so big, so most people are only there for two or three years...

And yes, Les Mis is the best musical ever. I've never actually seen it in person, but I really really really really (well, you get the point) want to. I've heard recordings of it though. The best I've heard was from London. There was a really bad one that I heard where Javert tried to out do Valjean and, needless to say, that's just wrong. Then he tried all this improv stuff and messed the whole thing up. And yet, it was still good.

Sorry about the teacher, but those are some awesome grades :D .

Oh and I forgot to ask, are you planning on singing while you terrorize the city or just do some planned choreography? :p

Singing would be interesting, seeing that the person I plan to do said terrorizing with is planning to dress up as Simba. :)

I thought the best Les Mis recording was the Complete Symphonic Recording *swoons over AndyWarlow!Enjolras*

[[EDIT]]

Had a rather pathetic study group for APUSH today. We got through all of...2 chapters. Over 8 hours. One member actually left, performed in a Christmas pageant, came back, and found us 3 pages past where we were when he had left. On the plus side, I now have a list of quotes from APUSH class that will keep me entertained for a v. long time ("*cough* Sorry, I have phlegm"). Downside is that I have to study 6 more chapters thoroughly before we meet in two days in order to make it in time for exams.

When are your exams? They sound like they're coming up soon.

What is it about APUSH classes and getting random quotes? You should hear my class. I really don't understand how we manage to get through the material, AND understand it! lol. And I haven't seen the musical of Les Mis, but I did read the book for English 10 honors last year. The long version. All 1400+ pages of it, and no offense intended, but parts got pretty dry during portions of it. Most parts were great, though, like when Valjean was being purseued in the sewers and the story of Fantine *sinf* so sad!

My midterms are in three days =(

The strange thing about APUSH is that no matter how many bad grades you get, no matter how many tests your teachers force you to take, no matter how many IDs you get assigned each week, the class itself is just...fun. Your classmates just end up being family o.o

Along the same lines, all-day cram sessions and tired members also produce interesting notes.
"John Rolfe perfected tobacco in rugby"
"The people who founded S. Carolina hoped to grow foodstuffs to provision sugar plantations in Barbados and to export non-English products: wine, silk, evil."

I loved Eponine's death scene =( And yeah, parts of the book I trudged through.

In my APUSH class we try and get our teacher onto rants all the time. Namely about historical myth, such as William Howard Taft got stuck in his bathtub.

We also like to push that Lincoln was a black man. Just to get him going.

One guy in my class successfully pulled my teacher into an argument over whether or not the Constitution is actually stored in an atomic bomb-proof container.

Wait, is it?

Wow, ShirtNinja's class sounds a bit like mine, except our teacher will just have some random things pop out of his mouth- Like when we were learning about the Puritans: "You're all going straight to HELL!" or other times "It is perfectly leagle in Alaska to punish someone for being Canadian." "Jedi mind-tricks, they never work *sigh*" and "This will be your mantra for the year: nobody's ever died in APUSH, nobody's ever..."

Oh I could go on and on. hehe, sorry.

And I don't thing it's in an atomic bomb-proof container. Is there even such a thing in exesitance?
