Hello, There.

Hey guys, I'm Andy from a suburb of Chicago. I'm a band geek, and I'm in AP US and AP Calc AB.... not much else to say really. You can reach me at zweibz7 on AIM if ya need me, not that you would... would you?

Hello Andy, welcome to course-notes!

Well, you didn't really post much to go on, but I hope that you find the site useful. If you need me you I'm pianogirl2422 almost everywhere, not hotmail though. I can help if you do ever hit a snag in Calc (I could use the hours, for anyone really) or in APUSH (wish I got hours for that...).

Anyways, welcome. What instrument(s) do you play?

I play Trumpet, and I fiddle around with the piano. I took piano lessons until 5th grade and have taught myself how to play by ear, so I do that sometimes. I'm really into the trumpet though. I assume you play piano as well?

OMG!!! YOU'RE PSYCHIC!!!!

Yes, I do play the piano, into my tenth or eleventh year of it. I don't know the exact date. I started learning by ear. My first song was "Here comes Peter Cottontail". I know, you were expecting "Mary had a Little Lamb", but I'm not your ordinary pianist :D . Trumpet is cool though. Never really got into playing other instruments, but I love to sing and play the piano.

You ever get so into playing that your mind kinda goes blank and your hands and breath just keep on going and you don't even realize that you're playing anymore? I love that feeling, where you and your instrument become one and making music is like breathing...

And now I'm rambling, so I'd better stop myself.

Now its my turn to say, "OMG YOUR PSYCHIC!"

Yeah that feeling is so great. I'm really into jazz and improv solos, so I get to do that a lot. My goal is to improve my playing so that i canget into that "one with your instrument" state and play better than I do now when I'm in my "one with your instrument" state... if that makes any sense?

Anyway, I'm gonna head out for a bit, I have to look over Reconstruction and the Civil War for a DBQ tomorrow morning. Catch ya later!

I totally understand what you mean. I'm that way too. The worst is when you start thinking and then you start to mess up.

Good luck on your DBQ!

Ouch... that DBQ was brutal :-\ Oh well, I BSed my last one and got a 7 so I should be allright. Plus, I've got a big research paper due by the end of the week, and that should bring up my grade substantially.

Hey! welcome to course notes! I have to admit, it feels kinda weird butting in on your guys' little talk here, hope you don't mind...your thing about the whole not-thinking-just-playing-the-music totally caught me, I thought I was the only one that did that :) I've played piano for about 8 years & have been playing the violin for about 3. I have a bunch of friends that play trumpet in band. i wish my school had an orchestra so i could play in it. Umm...I have a kind of off the wall question: Is it easier for you guys to sight-read or memorize stuff? My sight-reading is awful, so I memorize everything...I can still play American Pie on the piano by heart & I learned it in the fourth grade...weird
So yeah, welcome to course notes! Talk to ya'll later

Thanks for the welcome, and don't feel wierd about butting in, if it was a private convo we wouldn't have had it here :) Anyway, in response to your sight-read/memorize question, I have a somwhat odd response. I'm lucky in that my ear and mind are very musically endowed, if you will. If I hear a pattern or a tune a few times, its stuck in my head and I know how to play it. My friends joke with me because when we're playing in band, I'll be playing other people's parts when I have rests because I can figure them out. In a sense, i guess, I do memorize my music, but its not as if I sit down and spend a half-hour trying to memorize my whole part. I play what I remember and use the sheet music as a guideline, becausee my sight-reading is awul as well. :)

Wow musical genius! I bow down to your superior ability! lol jk I totally understand using "sheet music as a guideline" thing though. What kind of band do you play in?

Well, I play in a Jazz Ensemble (Big Band) and a Jazz Combo (Small Band... 6 ppl) through school. The combo is really what I enjoy, because its where we're given the opportunity to play improvisational solos and such, and that's what I'm really into. Anyway, I'm also in an "extra-curricular" big band outside of school, and that's fun because the talent level is a lot higher in the group outside of school. "Classical" music-wise, I'm in our school's Symphonic Wind Ensemble, and sometimes we connect with the school's orchestra to make a symphony. Our school and our sister school though have a big symphony orchestra, but I'm not part of that (too much to do :)). And extra-curricular-wise, I'm in the school's marching band and pep band. I'm pretty much surrounded by music wherever I go.
