Not what i expected....

so we got the results from our first quiz/test recently, and although the teacher had warned us to expect much lower grades than we were used to receiving, i have to admit i was quite shocked. i'm the kind of person who is pretty smart, but lazy, so... i usually do well on tests, but don't always end up with terrific grades because of homework and stuff like that. so far this class has been more or less the opposite; i've done most of the homework and summer assignments, but my quiz was a 78% and my test a 41% Some of you guys who've had ap classes before might be able to let me feel better by sharing some of your results and findings in your first experiences with it.

its only stupid if u do it twice

oh um....i got a 98% on the first test. And a perfect on my first essay.

Wow, I'm a horrible person?

Well... It's a matter of perception. It's important to realize that the first quiz/test/essay is with a new teacher too. You aren't used to that teacher, nor are they used to you. (Unless you are Shadow, obviously... :))

Yeah, don't mind Shadow. What probably happened is that you're not used to AP level questions. It takes some getting used to having choices where one is right, one is soo very close to being right ("the distracter" is what my teacher called it), and three choices that are all plausible. You'll start to notice that unlike your other social science courses where teachers were mainly concerns with "what happened when?". Now questions are going to be "why did something happen, why is it significant, and what were the effects?" It will also help if you learn your learning type. It'll get easier as you learn what to look for when you're reading. I'd be happy to help you if you want, just send me a PM.

Oh, and welcome back Mike.

Actually I just rocked APUSH because i'm very good at multiple choice tests, it all just sorta comes to me as common logic and making connections and inferences.

I aced APUSH tests cause our teacher was quite predictable. (And, as I really had history down naturally, I didn't ever have to worry)

Now, make me figure something out (like in physics) then I do poorly. Just not calculus for some reason. But now I'm being a bad mod and going off topic. Gradually getting back on topic: wait until essays, then you can show what you know without worrying if some other answer might be correct.

Oh I can't figure things out like science or math at all. I'm a very solid facts-based person.

Essays are always an adventure in proving your point.

I have the opposite problem. I can recite physics forumulas or solve chemistry problems, but history just don't stick with me. Sadly, I'm taking U.S. History post-civil war this year instead of physics since collegeboard won't tell me my stupid grade.

But hey, even I got better as the year wore on. AP classes are like that. They expect you to do poorly on your first grades. I know people who recovered their grades in physics after getting 20's on their first test. It's not impossible. And yes, essays are a blessing. I got an 8 on an essay of a book I didn't even read in second semester. I was actually shocked by that one. So don't worry too much, you're grades will improve.

... I should mention I consistantly got 20's on my physics tests, but that WAS cause of the teacher. (She conveniently had her contract pulled for this upcoming year or so I've heard - I guess that's what happens when you don't teach calculus-based physics according to college board specifications)

Hmmm, teachers usually don't get contracts pulled because of college-board unless you're school is like run by the pres. But if enough students fail the AP test, not to mention the class, then yeah, they're gonna fire you. Especially with all the craziness AYP creates. (no child left behind standards thing for those who don't know...)
