well, this might be true for Russia since the Mongol invasion of Russia caused the east-west gap. the other European societies were becoming more advanced socially, scientifically and technologically while the Russians were not (i am not sure if this is not considered the ruining of the russian society). centuries later when the Russians drove out the Mongols, they realized how undeveloped they were compared to European societies

but Mongols actually helped russia because russian city state leaders wanted to be independent but when the mongols took over they united russia causing russia to become stronger and defeat the mongols
