So, graduation is coming up in a few months (june 5th to be precise) and after having recieved my college acceptance letters (UCI, UCSB, CSUN, UCLA) i started to think about exactly where my life is. it hit me that in six months i will be on my own (well not totally alone i will be living with someone)-i will not be at home i will have to take care of myself. its a unsettlling and amazing feeling all at once. but i also have the feeling that by going straight to college, i will miss out on some awesome things...thing that you cant ever redo when your older, i cant really explain them....maybe it's because school has never been a real priority to me (i believe its very important but dont get me wrong, but in the grand scheme of things not #1 one my all important list) and because my two career choices dont require degress (acting, novelist) so apart of me is seriously considering moving to England and traveling around europe. But while i mull over that who else graduating this year or soon for that matter, has been thinking about life for the next four years?

I'm not graduating this year, but me and the rest of my class are seeing this upcoming graduation as our graduation too because this is the time we say good bye to our high school year and bury ourselves in IB and the suicide we've put ourselves in. (IB is like AP, but on a global scale where our papers are graded by experts all over the world we will never meet). And I suppose we sort of feel that way becuase we are subjecting ourselves into two entire years of backbreaking labor and we will probably no longer be able to have the fun, carefree life we had freshmen year, and even during AP.
So, the rest of my class have decided that this summer, we will probably go and have as much fun and enjoy the world as much as we can. We'll probably go to down to Florida, then fly off to Hawaii and I'm trying to convince them to even go to London. And there, we can enjoy the simpleness of life while we can.
I encourage you to travel. If you can, then do it. Traveling will open your eyes to a lot of stuff and you'll learn a lot about the different cultures and it'll help you in the two fields you're interested in too.

Do it during or after college, thats the perfect time to do it. College is definitely an experience you don't want to miss out on :)

I agree with Chris. Besides, you'll have semester breaks and there are study abroad programs where you can go to school in Europe or Asia. Not to mention, you can go to school in Europe - they've got colleges over there too. You can always transfer later if you want.

Hey, I graduate on May 30. I understand where you're coming from. :) I would love to travel around Europe, but as Chris and Pianogirl said, it would be better to wait until after college. That's what I'm planning on, anyway. And there is the study abroad thing. :) But from what everyone has said, including my sister, if you put of college, you'll never want to go and it will be harder if you do go. I'm looking at the next four years as a new learning experience, especially since I'm going to LUC in Chicago and I've grown up in a cornfield. It will be a bit different not being at home, but I think I'll manage okay. It'll be fun. The only part that has me worried is the whole roommate thing...time will tell, I guess. Lol.

i do agree with chirs and pianogirl, and i am most surely going to college, but the more i think about it i really do want to travel while i have the optimum opportunity, i mean no family, no kids, no established career... its funny actually because half of my friends flipped out when i said this theroy at all especially since i did get into good schools, and the other half was totally behind me. And its not like i would be running around london with all my stuff in a backpack and all, i would have a place to stay and a job and a roomate, i guess what i am really thinking about is does going to a school with a name, an established "important" reputation what is important to me, or is it simply my education? and i honestly i dont really care about if i go to UCLA or COC ( our local jr college) its not the status that matters to me, and with that i can really study anywhere....

Haha, I don't mind at all. I guess I really liked the campus and location. I like the fact that it's in Chicago, but feels like it's in the burbs. The neighborhood is nice, and it's easy to get to. I like the business school, and having it downtown is a plus; I'll *hopefully* be able to get an internship downtown or something along those lines. I also love Chicago, and I knew I wanted to go to a school in the city (I've grown up in cornfields). They also have a nice study abroad program, including campuses in Rome and Beijing, and I really want to study abroad. :-) And for the extra bonus, I was asked to join the Honors Program. Oh, they also have a ton of majors, so if I decide to switch from business, I've got a few choices. :-)

I graduated last year and my summer was spent taking classes so that I wouldn't have to take some courses in college. The summer before college is just a time to relax and spend time with family. I personally have dedicated one full year after my four years of college to travel before I go to grad. school.
I think that college is a great experience and if you miss out on the first year, you miss out on a lot. The dorm setting provides more than you can think about for your social and personal growth. It's an experience that you really don't want to miss out on. Also, during this time, you form bonds that will last you a lifetime. I mean, traveling is a good idea and that's what I originally wanted to do as well...even if it was only during the summer, but really...don't miss out on the first year of college. After that, there are study abroad programs that you can apply for and spend a whole year in a different country if you wanted to. ^^

Since you mentioned that you think about travelling around Europe or so, you can combine that with your college life. I got some friends a spent a semester abroad (Europe) and said that they would do it again.
If you can find for example a university in - let's say - Austria, I'm pretty sure that you would find plenty of time to travel around and visit Germany, France, Spain, England, etc.
I believe that we all had the same thoughts as you do but as it was brought up before, college life is an experience that you shouldn't miss. :)

of course, and to be fair when i posted that i was more than a little stressed and it was a hectic day, so i was having some very strong black and white thoughts....and not to mention the fact that with two months left of school and may basically being a lame month for school besides finals i guess im just seriously realizing i have to be apart of the actual world and really grow up which im not scared of, just surprised that it came up so suddenly on me. and im having a hard time deciding between schools (ucla and uci) so.....
and i honestly just wanted to see what other people are doing or have done out of curiosity.
Wow Der laufer is seems like you have it all planned out :) kudos on the buisness track, im always impressed by people who function with other parts of their brain besides english and theater haha, i know what you mean about wanting to be near the city but still like the burbs, although to be fair i grew up in typical suburbs (actually around where they filmed power rangers lol) and i love being close to LA, for me if i got to ucla then i want to major in english and then hopefully get an intership at random house or rollingstone or la times...but that is a pipedream

No, I wouldnt say that laVieBoheme. To me there is no such thing as a pipedream, but just stuff that pans out and stuff that doesnt pan out. You take a swing, you float between foul and homerun, and then you just try to steer it out of the park. Thats how I see things.
But hey, you do what you can,and trust me, youve probably got alot more influence than you think.
