AP Notes, Outlines, Study Guides, Vocabulary, Practice Exams and more!
My summer assignment for my upcoming AP English class is to read two books and do all this work on them.
One of the choices was The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, which I already read in the past, so I picked that book, but I also need to choose another one.
+ A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man
+ Crime and Punishment (I've read good reviews on this one)
+ Song of Solomon
are the other choices I have.
Have any of you read any of them?

I haven't read any of the books (sorry!) but Crime and Punishment is the one I've heard of - probably the most famous of the ones there. My best advice is to look for summaries/synopsises (synopsies?) and find the book that sounds like it would interest you the most.

I do not recommend that you read Crime and Punishment. It is a wonderful book (I am currently reading it now) but you might look for something a bit shorter if you are reading in prep for the open ended essay. It would be hard to write a forty minute essay over such a long book. However, if you feel that Crime and Punishment is going to be a book that you really understand and one that you strongly relate to, go for it. Hopefully, you will find a book that captivates you and one that you just really get, and you will use that for the open ended essay. For me, it was Heart of Darkness.
BTW, for anyone taking the AP Lit, I suggest the Princeton Review study guide. It was pretty helpful for me.
In my opinion all books are good but you can read this book: A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. I think this is best for you. Another two books are also good. I read crime and punishment.

Choosing a book for an essay is more about the topic and overall undertones than length You can get just as much from a book of 100 pages as a novel 900 pages if you maintain an interest in the book throughout. Case in point JRR Tolkens books, The Knight in Rusty Armor and The Scarlet Letter. I have read all 3. However I gained much more from the first two, one long one short, than I ever did the thrid. The more it applies to you or your interests the more likey you will do well in class. Best of Luck!
