1996 DBQ DUE!!!! help please?

okay, so if you're even reading this, thanks alot. the question is from a 1996 dbq. It asks "In what ways and to what extent did constitutional and socail developments between 1860 and 1877 amount to a revolution?' ..Now, first of all, would the changing economy be considered socail or constitutional? Im pretty much set with discussing socail development, but what about constitutional? and I ALWAYS do poorly on DBQs, so does anyone one have anything that can really wow the teacher or anything? any really good points, or deep thoughts? I appreciate every little bit. thank you so much/

First, let's define "revolution" historically. Usually that means some action "outside" the normal channels of politics. This did NOT happen, therefore, the question is argumentative as it makes you assume a revolution occured. You can directd a large portion of you essay along this line while still supporting your arguements with historical events. That ought to WOW your teacher.

Next, the obvious, unstated focus is Reconstruction. This could be argued as a social revolution with the freed slaves creating into an entirely new social stratus and the whites, both North and South, reacting. Violence, political barriers, terrorism, share cropping poverty and other negative reactions can be discussed. Positive legacies can be education, land owneship, freedom of movement, and, eventually, full civil rights for the freedmen. Be careful, some of these took longer than 1877 to be completed but that comment in the essay is precisely what AP readers like myself are looking for: historical perspective.
