The Constitution--Balancing Competing Interests
Americans' experience with British rule and the Articles of Confederation gave rise to considerable apprehension about the placement of power in a new government. The Fouding Fathers attempted to allow those fears thourgh compromises that safeguarded the interests of competing groups. The following chart lists some of those fears. Identify the cause of each fear and how one or more provisions of the Constitution calmed that fear.
Fear.....................................................Source of Fear...........................Provision to calm the fear
1.Fear of large states
2.Fear of people
3.Fear of weak central government
4.Fear of unwritten word
5.Fear of other states
6.Fear of foreign powers
7.Fear of strong executive
8.Fear of losing individual rights.
9.Fear of central government
9. Fear of Central Government: The colonists remembered the tyrannical British government. Provision to calm fear: "The powerful president was to be elected indirectly by the Electoral College; the lordly senators were to be chosen indirectly by state legislatures.
Sorry... can't think of any more. There's something about strengthening the central government on page 181 of American Pageant 11e.

I'm also working on this handout and I find it to be very hard
Fear of large states: With the Virginia Plan, representation in Congress would be proportional to population, giving the larger states control. To calm this fear, the New Jersey Plan was made, giving states equal representation.
Fear of unwritten word: People were afraid that the losse constructionists would use the elastic clause to expand gov't power and take away the rights of the people. Not too sure about the provision, except that strict constructionists argue against the loose.

the only one I cant figure out is FEAR OF THE PEOPLE AND the provision.
Why would they be scared of the people? is it because of Loyalists?
Fear of the people could be related to the Articles creating a weak central government (no nat'l currency) and also the Loyalists because they contacted England.
I don't know what your destiny will be, but one thing I know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who will have sought and found how to serve.:)

im stuck on most as well but im pretty sure that the fear of people is the fear of mob rule, that would rebel (dont know how they calmed that fear, sorry).
Where is this handout coming from? Is there a workbook associated with your textbooks?
