244134037Tang Dynasty(618-907 CE) Political Developmentafter Han Dynasty, China went back to regional small kingdom for next 400 years. In 581 CE Sui dynasty reunited, was short but influential. used Buddhism and the Confucian civil service system to establish legtimacy. Started construction of the Grand Canal, launched military campaigns to expand empire. Rebellions throughout 618 CE overthrew empire, but still had foundation for following dynasties. Tang Dynasty was more focused on scholars than soldiers. expanded its territory beyond China proper to Tiber and Korea. also completed the Grand Canal. offered support to Buddhism, Daoism, and Confucisnism. Capital,Changan,was major political center foreign diplomats visited from the Byzantine and Arab worlds. Confucian beliefs solified into Chinese government via examination system. Middle of 700s the Tang power declined because of high taxes causing tension in population. Led to regional rule and abdication of emperor. Afterwards period of rule by regional warlords for 50 years.0
244134038Tang Dynasty(618-907 CE) Economic DevelopmentsEstablished military garrisons as far out as Kashgar, allowed for protection and security of Silk Road trade. An equal field system was established(all peasants received land for tax of grain and corvee, at death returned land to government). But still had difficulties breaking the power of large landowners. Changan major trading center and cosmopolitan city. The West market flourished with Indian,Iranian,Syrian, and Arab traders and their goods. By 640 CE, population reached 2 million making it the largest city in the world at that time.1
244280725Tang Dynasty(618-907 CE) Cultural DevelopmentsHeavily influenced by spread of Bhuddism. Empress Wu concerned with any possible threat to her power, but started a school dedicated to Bhuddist and Confucian scholarship. Her support for Bhuddism and its art increased religion's influence through China. towards end of dynasty(from 841-845 CE) anti-buddhist campaigns destroyed many monostaries and weakened religion's influence.2
