93746764Lucius Cornelius Sulla (83 -78 BCE)Lucius was a veteran of several foreign campaigns who allied with the conservative and aristocratic classes. He seized Rome after the death of Gaius Marius and initiated a grisly slaughter of his enemies. During a reign of terror, Sulla brought about the murder or execution of some ten thousand individuals. By the time he died, Sulla had imposed an extremely conservative legislature program that weakened the influence of the lower classes and strengthened the hand of the wealthy in Roman politics.0
93746765Julius Caesar (46-44 BCE)Julius Caesar, the nephew of Marius, favored liberal policies and sought social reform. Caesar played an active role in Roman politics and spent enormous sums of money sponsoring public spectacles, which helped him build a reputation and win election to posts in the republican government. Caesar also led an army to Gaul and conquered it and brought it into the still-growing Roman Empire. His victory made him very popular in Rome and Caesar turned his army to Rome and became dictator of Rome. He centralized military functions and political functions and brought them under his own control. He distributed land to veterans, launched large- scale building projects, and extended citizenship to peoples in the imperial provinces. Many members of the Roman elite classes did not like his policies and assassinated him.1
93746766Gaius Marius (87-83 BCE)Gaius sided with social reformers who advocated redistribution of land. He placed the city of Rome under military occupation and hunted down his political enemies.2
