A group of French merchants hired Samuel de Champlain to find a place to build a settlement. Samuel de Champlain was a French explorer who founded Quebec in what is now Canada. He was also a intrepid soldier who became known as the "Father of New France" who entered into friendly relations with the Huron Indians and helped them defeat the Iroquois.
