3652952729Why is Lincoln in 1861 the president of the United States of America and the dis-United States of America?because 7 states had ceded, 8 were teetering on the edge of leaving and America was headed towards a bloody battle.0
3652965000What happens at Fort Sumter,South Carolina? What is Lincoln's strategy?it only had a few resources and was to be taken over by the Confederacy like most of the other Forts in the south and Lincoln sent in people to give them provisions instead of weapons and ammo but the South thought it was an act of aggression and attacked the fort and made the Union surrender it but this was Lincoln's plan all along to get the South to attack and fire the Northerners up to fight1
3652971341What is the impact of the Fort Sumter event?Lincoln was now waging war on the South and prompted 4 more states to cede to the Confederacy2
3652984453What were the Border States? Why are they important? What was Lincoln's strategy with them at the beginning of the war, and why does he have to use this strategy?States that were neither Union or Confederate they are important because they give the Union an advantage as long as the North didnt attack the South first because if so the states would have most likely ceded and the South would have won and these border states would have doubled the the manufacturing capacity and increased the amount of mules and horses to the south. Lincoln wanted them because they had a river that led directly into where the Confederacy produced most of their resources so he would do whatever the states wanted to keep them from ceding even if it wasn't exactly legal because any statement about Lincoln fighting this war just to free the slaves would have drove the Border states away very quickly3
3652996296Why is the early part of the Civil War considered a "brother's war"? How were the sides less clear than just "North and South"?Because northern families could have pro and anti slavery members and often family members were fighting against each other instead of strangers from the North and South fighting4
3653008141What are the South's advantages at the beginning of the war? Disadvantages? The south could fight defensively behind interior lines, in fact they didn't even have to win the war to be independent, they had amazing military leaders, accustomed to fighting/ they had almost no factories and ran low on shoes and clothing often, they were going hungry from supply problems caused by their poor railroad system, the economy5
3653011553What advantages does the North have at the beginning of the war? Disadvantages? They had 3/4 of the nation's power and the nation's railroads, superior navy that eventually choked the South's supplies, large supply of soldiers(22 million)/ soldiers were far less prepared for the life of war than the Southern ones, their generals were not very good6
3653014932What what-ifs could have led to a victory for the South in this war?If the Border States had ceded, If Britain or France had teamed up with the South, if the Border states along the mississippi river had turned on the Union7
3653037357Why didn't European nations like England and France help the South, even though the South expected them to help because of King Cotton?Because they had read the book Uncle Tom's Cabin and knew that the South still practiced such a primitive way of life. Half of Britain was willing to look past this but the other half was fully prepared to fight to not support them8
3653040690What was the Trent Affair?A union warship attacked a british mail ship and forcefully removed two Confederate men who were on their way to Europe and this infuriated the Europeans and they prepared to go to war with the Yankees but the London Foreign Office cooled things off by demanding an apology and the return of the prisoners9
3653047929What was the significance of the Alabama? Who built it, What did it do,importance? What were the Laird Rams?It was a British ship that captured other ships and would attack Yankee ships and the North now had to divert their power to chase after these boats and was finally defeated in 1864. The Laird Rams were 2 confederate warships being constructed in the shipyard of John Laird and Sons in Great Britain they were designed to destroy the wooden Union ships10
3653055011Describe the personality and qualities of Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederacy.Jefferson was tense, humorless, stubborn and almost always in some form of trouble he was well spoken but wasn't very popular and was often considered to be impeached. He often overworked himself with business about the military11
3653061640Describe the personality and qualities of Abraham Lincoln, President of the UnionLincoln was quiet, patient and tactful and was charitable towards the South and people who were rude towards him12
3653068715What are the major ways that Lincoln broke rules in the Constitution? He increased the size of the Federal army and directed the secretary of the Treasury to advance 2 million without appropriation or security to three private clients for military reasons he suspended habeas corpus13
3653079453What does "habeas corpus" mean? What does it mean that Lincoln suspended habeas corpus during the war? Why did he do it?a law requiring a person under arrest to be brought before a judge or into court, especially to secure the person's release unless lawful grounds are shown for their arrest, Lincoln suspending this was him going against a ruling by a chief justice but he did this so he could imprison Confederate soldiers14
3653096008What is "the draft"? Describe the problems with it. What were the New York Draft riots? Why were African-Americans victimized?Less and less people were volunteering to go to war so Congress passed a law that drafted men to the war but rich people could pay someone to go to war in their place or pay 300 to simply not go at all. The New York Draft riots was a bunch of Irish Americans who were poor and racist screaming down with the drafts and Lincoln and went on for days lynching blacks and robbing places. African-Americans were victimized probably because they weren't yet allowed to go to war leading to the drafts and forcing irish americans who were poor and couldn't pay their way out to risk their lives in war15
3653105927Describe the manpower problems that the North and South had during the war as they struggled to maintain and build their armies.North had many volunteers but soon they became injured and needed more soldiers to replace the injured ones. they soon became desperate and began offering bounties to people so they would enlist in the army but with money flowing so loosely this brought problems because people would get irish men drunk and force them to enlist and pocket the money for themselves. The South at first relied mainly on volunteers but because the Confederacy was much less populated than the North and was out of soldiers much quicker and resorted to people young as 17 and old as 50 and said as long as they could see and hear they were fit for war the south turned to drafts quicker than the north16
3653112692How the North pay for the war [taxes and tariff]?Even though they were wealthy they had passed the Morrill Tariff Act when the South had ceded and with war the taxes increased sharply to provide them with protection and revenue17
3653117124The North starts to print Greenback money during the war. What was this, and what problems are associated with it?Washington Treasury also issued greenbacked money valuing 450 million and this didnt equal the gold that was already in use and at one point they were only worth 39 cents to the gold and people who owned the paper money were victims of inflation and indirectly taxes as the value of the dollar went down18
3653131516The North also raised money with bonds-what are bonds? The National Banking System?Bonds are loans that came with interest and were payable at a later date/ national banking system was authorized by congress in 1863 and was launched as a stimulant to the sale of bonds and designed to establish a standard currency19
3653137601How did the South begin to experience economic problems during the war?Custom duties were choked off by the Union and alot of bonds were sold by them to people in the confederacy and abroad which amounted to nearly 400 million, increasing taxes imposed a 10% levy on farm produce and as revenue started to dry up the Confederate government was forced to print money but this caused inflation because they did it mindlessly, it got so bad that the dollar was only worth 1.6 cents20
3653168475Describe the Industrial and economic boom the North has during the war, and the positive and negative things this creates [millionaires, women/work, oil, machines and factories, greed and rip-offs]the factories under the protective tariffs are flourishing and prices are skyrocketing but this caused strain on the working class but on the other hand caused an economic class of billionaires to be formed but with all this wealth there was a rise in theft. People looking to make a quick buck would start lowering the quality of their products so they could sell more. machinery caused the north to expand economically even thought most of their workers were off fighting. the discovery of petroleum oil caused another rush but this time to Pennsylvania this caused the birth of a new industry with nearly 300 thousand people moving westwards. With almost all the men gone new job opportunities opened up for women in America, in DC 500 women clerks became actual workers the booming demand for shoes and clothing prompted women to work in retail sewing and manufacturing clothing.21
3653173867Describe how women got involved in the war as combat nurses.about 400 women accompanied their significant other in battle by disguising as a male, becoming a spy, the first female physician helped organise the U.S. Sanitary Commision to assist union armies this commision trained nurses, collected medical supplies and equipped hospitals22
3653176815How did the war create an economic collapse in the South? The south fought to the point of exhaustion because the North completely suffocated them and destroyed them when invading, the South only claimed 12% of the nation's wealth post war the Southerner income was 2/5th of the Northerner.23
