11379638963Tang Dynasty(607- 907 CE) During this time, China enjoyed relative prosperity and stability. Dominated its neighbors, viewed themselves as the "Middle Kingdom" (better than the rest). Emperor had neighbors paying tributes for them. Collapsed because of the Uighurs rebelling.6
11380226521Silla Kingdom(not part of China) In Korea, payed a large tribute to the emperor. Was a tributary system, a state that had to honor the Chinese emperor.7
11380226522Song Dynasty(960- 1279 CE) Nomadic pastoralists from Manchuria who set up their own empire. They ruled a smaller region than Tang. China was prosperous during this rule and the arts flourished. Emperor made efforts to expand educational opportunities. Bureaucracy was too large for them, so it became a weakness, and so the Mongols took over.8
11380226523Yuan Dynasty(1260- 1378 CE) established by the nomadic Mongol Empire who vanquished the government. The Song Empire had been paying tribute to the Mongols, but that wasn't enough to save China from Mongol domination.9
11380226524Ming Dynasty(1368- 1644 CE) Ming rulers managed to stabilize the East Asian region for nearly 300 years. The Ming era would see the arrival of the Portuguese and other Europeans. Fell because of the powerful Manchu (from Manchuria) who seized power and established the Qing Dynasty.10
11380226525Minamoto Clan(12th century- 16th century) Rose to power after the Heian. Installed a shogun, emphasized military prowess.11

Small feet was considered a sign of beauty, but it was very painful. Many women struggled to walk and some needed to be carried around by servants. Poor people did not do it because it signified a woman's social status.15

11380226531Chan (Zen) BuddhismNew form of Buddhim that emphasized direct experience and meditation as opposed to formal learning based on scripture. Buddhism's popularity in China grew because of this, and remained popular among ordinary Chinese systems.17
11380226532Shotoku Taishi(lived 574- 622) Prince of the dominant Yamato region. Wrote a new constitution that consolidated power for all of Japan in one ruler. Argued for a centralized government with a merit based system of selecting bureaucrats.18
11380226533Fujiwara Clan(710- 794 CE) A clan that took control of the government and moved the capital city to Nara. Continued in the tradition of Shotoku in modeling itself after Tang China.19
11380226534HeianBecame capital in 794. Heian Period (794- 1185 CE), tried to emulate Chinese political traditions. Not successful, because Heian Japan slipped back into a pattern of political decentralization.20

11380226536The Tale of GengiA story written by Murasaki Shikibu. Melancholy story about life among Japan's elite, focuses on the psychological development of one main character (like modern stories). Often cited at the world's first novel.22
