While waiting for him, she had an affair with a Puritan minister named Dimmesdale, after which she gave birth to Pearl. Hester. Her alienation puts her in the position to make acute observations about her community, particularly about its treatment of women. Pearl - Hester's daughter, a young girl with a mischievous spirit and an ability to perceive things that others do not, she discerns the truth about her mother and Dimmesdale. The townspeople say that she barely seems human and spread rumors that her unknown father is actually the Devil. Roger Chillingworth - actually Hester's husband in disguise. He is much older than she is and had sent her to America while he settled his affairs in Europe. Because he is captured by Native Americans, he arrives in Boston belatedly and finds Hester and her illegitimate child being displayed on the scaffold. He lusts for revenge, disguises himself as a doctor, intent on discovering and tormenting Hester's lover. Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale - he and Hester became lovers. Although he will not confess it publicly, he is the father of her child. He deals with his guilt by tormenting himself physically and psychologically, developing a heart condition as a result. Over the course of the novel, he learns to admire and love Elizabeth for her strong character. Jane Bennet - The eldest and most beautiful Bennet sister. Jane is more reserved and gentler than Elizabeth. The easy pleasantness with which she and Bingley interact contrasts starkly with the mutual distaste that marks the encounters between Elizabeth and Darcy. Charles Bingley - purchases Netherfield. He is a gentleman, whose easygoing nature contrasts with Darcy's demeanor. His decadent, indulgent life as a parish priest takes place before the novel begins, but it is present in his thoughts throughout the novel as a source of deep humiliation. He spends the novel pursued by the police who believe the Church exploits the poor. He meets his daughter, the product of a secret affair with one of his parishioners, and finds that his love for her makes it impossible for him to repent the sin of conceiving her. The Lieutenant - A believer in the law, a staunch opponent of the Catholic Church, and the priest's pursuer. The Mestizo - A person the priest meets about halfway through his journey and who continues to reappear throughout the last half of the novel. The mestizo is from the very beginning an untrustworthy character who seems intent on betraying the priest. Coral Fellows - Coral is a young American girl whom the priest meets early on in the novel when she discovers him hiding on her family's property. Independent-minded and responsible, she anchors her family Mr. Tench- a dentist who meets the priest in the beginning and sees him executed at the end. Bernard's surname recalls Karl Marx a monumental critique of capitalist society. Bernard's discontent stems from his frustrated desire to fit into his own society. Helmholtz Watson - An Alpha lecturer at the College of Emotional Engineering, feels that his work is meaningless and would like to use his writing abilities for something more. He and Bernard are friends because they find common ground in their discontent with the World State, but Helmholtz's criticisms of the World State are more intellectual. Lenina Crowne - A vaccination worker at the Central London Hatchery and Conditioning Centre. She is an object of desire for many including Bernard Marx and John. Her behavior is sometimes intriguingly unorthodox, which makes her attractive to the reader. For example, she defies her culture's conventions by dating one man exclusively for several months, she is attracted to Bernard, and she develops a violent passion for John the Savage. Mustapha Mond - The Resident World Controller of Western Europe, one of only ten World Controllers. He eventually becomes a leader of the crusade to unseat Macbeth. Vain, fashionable, supremely aware of courtesy and the lack of it, he becomes aggressive, violent, and quick to draw his sword when he feels his pride has been injured. Capulet - The patriarch of the Capulet family, father of Juliet, husband of Lady Capulet Lady Capulet - Juliet's mother, Capulet's wife. A woman who herself married young Montague - Romeo's father, the patriarch of the Montague clan and bitter enemy of Capulet. Lady Montague - Romeo's mother, Montague's wife. She dies of grief after Romeo is exiled from Verona. Feeling used and unloved, Janie leaves him for Jody Starks. Pheoby Watson - Janie's best friend in Eatonville. Pheoby gives Janie the benefit of the doubt when the townspeople gossip viciously about Janie. She is the audience for Janie's story Nanny Crawford - Janie's grandmother. Jack - The novel's antagonist, one of the older boys stranded on the island. Jack becomes the leader of the hunters but longs for total power and becomes increasingly wild Simon - A shy, sensitive boy in the group. Simon, in some ways the only naturally "good" character on the island, behaves kindly toward the younger boys and is willing to work for the good of their community. Piggy represents the scientific, rational side of civilization. Roger - Jack's "lieutenant."
