He was nominated for president in 1876 by the Democratic party because of his clean up image. This election was so close that it led to the Compromise of 1877. Even though he had more popular votes, the compromise gave the presidency to the Republicans and allowed the Democrats to stop Reconstruction in the South.4
7949911623James A. GarfieldHe was elected to the presidency in 1880. He barely won the popular vote, but won by a huge margin in the electoral college. He was assassinated, so that the Stalwarts could be in power in the government. This brought about reforms in the spoils systems.5
7949911624Charles GuiteauIn 1881, he shot President Garfield in the back in a Washington railroad station. He allegedly committed this crime so that Arthur, a Stalwart, would become president. His attorneys used a plea of insanity, but failed and he was hanged for murder.6
7949911625Chester A. ArthurAppointed customs collector for the port of New York - corrupt and implemented a heavy spoils system. He was chosen as Garfield's running mate. Garfield won but was shot, so he became the 21st president.7
7949911628Grover ClevelandHe was the Democratic presidential candidate for the 1884 election. The election turned into a mudslinging contest. He won, becoming the first Democratic president since Buchanan. He would lose the 1888 election but return to the presidency by winning the 1892 election.8
7949911629Benjamin HarrisonHe was the 23rd President of the United States, elected in 1888. He had previously served as a senator from Indiana. His administration is best known for a series of legislation including the McKinley Tariff and federal spending that reached one billion dollars.9

He was a dominant Republican leader of the post Civil War period, obtaining the 1884 Republican nomination, but lost to Democrat Grover Cleveland.14
7949911641Winfield S. HancockA Civil War general who appealed to the South due to his fair treatment of it during Reconstruction and a veteran who had been wounded at Gettysburg, and thus appealed to veterans. he was the 1880 Democratic candidate for president15
