13721174225Mit'a SystemAn Incan system where citizens are required to work for the government for a set amount of time for the greater good of the empire. Later used by the Spanish on the Incans to mine silver0
13721195858Encomienda SystemSet up by the Spanish crown, it put native Americans under the control of the conquistadors. The conquistadors provided the natives with protection and taught them Catholicism, in exchange the natives worked for them (mostly mining) and paying tribute to them. This became similar to slavery. There was a new social hierarchy set up.1
13721275344Slavery (in the Americas)This type of slavery was based off of race as Africans were sold to plantation farmers of wealthy families. In the plantations labor was intense; in the Caribbean most didn't survive past 3 years. In the United States it was common for slaves to work as household servants.2
13721315373Indentured ServitudeA contractual system in which someone sells his or herself or someone in their family for a specified period of time, typically to payoff a debt. It is similar to slavery, except that it is voluntary entered into.3
13721321163FuedalismA social system in medieval Europe, where nobility held lands from the Crown in exchange for military service. The vassals were in turn tenants of the nobles, while the peasants (villeins or serfs) were obliged to live on their lord's land and give him homage, labor, and a share of the produce, notionally in exchange for military protection.4
13721323083classical slaveryA system where prisoners of war were used to provide any labor that they were instructed to do. Typically, a father could sell himself or his family into slavery to clear a debt.5
