In 1402, Zhu Di rose to power known as Emperor Yongle. He was the leader of the seven voyages from 1405-1433. He traveled to Southeast Asia, Indonesia, India, Arabia, and East Africa in attempt to get the people enrolled in the Chinese tribute system. The voyages established Chinese power in the Indian Ocean, and their control over foreign trade. However, they were not to conquer territories or spread culture. He brought back ostriches, lions, and elephants. Although Muslim, he had a more eclectic posture toward religion since he had not been in a Muslim environment since he was a child. China's opportunity to construct a maritime empire in the Indian Ocean disappeared with Zheng He once he resigned from his voyages.27
