Expression used by Southern authors and orators before Civil War to indicate economic dominance of Southern cotton industry, and that North needed South's cotton. Coined by James Hammond.
Lower South where cotton production dominated the more recently settled areas. Cotton Kingdom.
(1846-1880) A magazine that strongly advocated the southern commercial and agricultural expansion. However, shows dependency of the South on the North: had to be printed in the North because the South had no adequate facilities, always ran ads for Northern companies, and never achieved the circulation of Northern magazines.
Southerners relied heavily on the North for financial backing.
White Southerners believed that they represented a way of life which displayed chivalry, leisure, and elegance. They were very content with their way of life and did not wish to change it
The few owners of large plantations with many slaves that were at the top of a hierarchical social order. They exercised power and influence in excess of their numbers and controlled the political, economic, social life of their regions. They were new to wealth and power.
Avoided "coarse" occupations such as trade and commerce. They defended their honor through "dueling."
Wealthy women in the South were treated similarly to children. Their only right was to protection and they had to obey their husbands. However, they were the standard for high class Southern life.
Typical white southern, not a great planter, but a yeomen farmer with a few slaves or no slaves at all. Usually devoted to subsistence farming (farming what you can eat). Not much social mobility.
A society where the father is the head of the family. Southern families became more patriarchal when families became more secure. This dampened some of the power the female population in the South had.
A euphemism for slavery and the economic ramifications of it in the American South. The term aimed to explain away the seeming contradiction of legalized slavery in a country whose Declaration of Independence states that "all men are created equal". It was one of the key causes of the Civil War.
To regulate slavery the southern colonies introuduced Slavce Codes (added to later, and more and more enforcement). What had been a fairly loose, informal system gradually evolved into an increasingly harsh, rigid regulated system that controlled nearly every aspect of their lives. They were forbidden from leaving their masters premises without permission, being out of doors after dark, congregating with other slaves except at church, carrying firearms, owning property, striking a white person even in self defense, testifying in court against white people, marriages among slaves were not legal, if an owner killed a slave while phinshing him the act was not considered a rime, slaves faced the death penalty for killing or even resisting a white person and for inciting to revolt, and prohibited white people from teaching slaves to read or write.
Consisted of slaves who lived close to master and family. They ate leftovers and sometimes slept in the "big house." Familial relationships might have developed. These slaves resented isolation from fellow slaves, no privacy, and were punished more often and more noticeably.
Often left to the discipline of overseers, who had less economic stake in their well-being. They were paid in proportion to amount of work they could get out of their slaves. Owners tried to preserve health and usefulness of their slaves.
Slaves may be employed to load and unload boats, or other jobs that people think that the white people should be doing. Companies own these type of slaves. The companies pay the slaves a wage in order for them to find lodging, feed themselves, and buy clothing. This is done as long as the slave shows up to work and stay all day. They are allowed to get married, hang out with friends and family. Least amount of runaways in this type of slavery.
African Americans who were free citizens; majority lived in cities where they could own property, however they were still not considered equal with whites. They were not allowed to vote or travel freely in the South. They were denied the ability to hold many professional jobs.
Domestic was the worst type, but it helped sustain the system. It separated families and dehumanized those who were involved in it. Foreign was just as bad. The law in 1808 had made the importation of slaves illegal but they were still smuggled into the states up until the 1850s.
Type of resistance used by slaves. Made plantation owners think slaves were dumb, ignorant, or barbaric. Led to people saying blacks needed to be enslaved.
The first armed rebellion was organized by this man and 50 other slaves living near Richmond, VA. Hundreds of slaves heard about the plan, and 2 of them told the white authorities. Governor James Monroe called out the militia and Prosser and 25 of his followers were executed and their owners received compensation. Black resistance to enslavement played an important role in fashioning a compromise to the sectional controversy of 1850.
(1767-1822), American insurrectionist. A freed slave in South Carolina, he was implicated in the planning of a large uprising of slaves and was hanged. The event led to more stringent slave codes in many Southern states.
(1800-1831) Slave from Virginia that led group of slaves to kill their slaves holders and families. He was caught and executed on November 11, 1831. Led the state legislature of Virginia to enact a policy that said no one could question slavery
Labor slowdowns, breaking tools, running away, and performing tasks improperly.
