a speech made to show/ reflect the character's innermost feelings; very personal and gives insight to the character's thoughts (the only person on stage)
using 2 contradictory words together; gives effect (ex: Claudius' oxymoron about birth in funeral or dirge in marriage)

Fortinbras is a foil to Hamlet - Fortinbras is a man of action (attempts to avenge's his father's death right away) - Hamlet is a dreamer (loves to act, but never persues it; wants to avenge is father, but takes his time and is unsure of how to approach it)

when Hamlet mistakenly kills Polonius instead of Claudius (this is also the dramatic reverse of the play)
Laertes is a foil to Hamlet -Laertes forms a mob outside the castle when he hears his father has been killed and demands to know who is responsible.

She was as beautiful & delicate as a flower - flowers are: pretty, short lived, fragile & need care -She had no one to care for her/ give her attention& she wilted *she also never had any control over her life--she doesnt fight the current of the water, she's carried down the river
