This is a review of terminology assigned over the summer for students beginning AP Language and Composition.

31538096asyndetonthe lack of a conjunction between coordinate words, phrases, or clauses
31538097chiasmusa reversal in the order of words in two otherwise parallel phrases
31538098epistrophethe repetition of a word or words at the end of two or more successive verses, clauses, or sentences
31538099loose sentencea type of sentence in which the main idea (independent clause) comes first, followed by dependent grammatical structures such as phrases and clauses
31538100metonymya figure of speech in which a person, place or thing is referred to by something closely associated with it
31538101parallelismkeeping ideas of equal importance in similar grammatical form
31538102periodic sentencea sentence that presents its central meaning in a main clause at the end (This independent clause is preceded by a phrase or clause that cannot stand alone.)
31538103polysyndetonthe repetition of a conjunction in a series of coordinate words, phrases, or clauses
31538104predicate adjectivean adjective following a linking verb that describes the subject
31538105predicate nominativea noun or pronoun that follows a linking verb and refers to the same person or thing as the subject of the verb
31538106rhetorical questiona question that is asked merely for effect and does not expect a reply (the answer is assumed)
31538107syllogisma three-step form of reasoning that employs deduction - The first premise is a major premise, the second is minor, and they lead to a sound conclusion.
31538108synecdocheunderstanding one thing for another; the use of a part for the whole, or the whole for the part
