Mitosis Flashcards

The primary result of mitosis is the transferring of the parent cell's genome into two daughter cells. These two cells are identical and do not differ in any way from the original parent cell. Mitosis occurs in our heart, liver, brain, skin, blood and more. Why is Mitosis so important?

1264384332Prophase*Mitosis begins*; centrioles appear and begin to move to opposite ends of cell; spindle fibers form between the poles.2
1264384333MetaphaseChromatids attach to *spindle fibers*; chromosomes line in *middle* of cell3
1264384334Anaphase*Chromatids separate*, begin to move to opposite ends, pulled by the spindle fibers4
1264384335TelophaseCell *membrane moves inward* to create two daughter cells - each with own nucleus with identical chromosomes.5
1264384336Cytokinesis*Two new nuclei* form, chromosomes appear as chromatin, *mitosis ends*6
1264384337CentromereMost *condensed* region of a chromosome; where *spindle fiber attached* during mitosis7
1264384338MitosisCell division when nucleus divides into two nuclei containing the *same number* of chromosomes ending in *2 identical cells*8
1264384339Spindle FibersSpecial *microtubules* made of proteins - connect to centromeres and pull apart chromosomes9
1264384340G1 PhaseStage of interphase in which cell *grows and performs* its normal functions10
1264384341S PhaseSynthesis phase of the cell cycle; the portion of interphase during which *DNA is replicated*11

1264384345MetaphaseShortest phase of mitosis.15
1264384346Chromatidtwo identical strands of the same chromosomes16
1264384347chromosomeDuring prophase and metaphase, the DNA in a eukaryotic cell is tightly packed and coiled into structures called...17
