327605019In what ways were the revolutionary movements in Mexico, northern South America, and southern South America similar?1. In Mexico, northern South America, and southern South America, each region made an effort to create unified nations. Other movements taking place in these regions were the movement to create representative governments, and establish rights to private property and free trade. Except for a brief period in Mexico, all former Spanish American colonies became republics, except for Brazil, which was a monarchy. There was less overall agreement in South America and Mexico in regards to freedom of religion. Slavery had been abolished everywhere except for Spain's few remaining colonies, namely Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Brazil. Voting rights, though they did factor in, were restricted to only Creoles and men.1
327605020In what ways were the Latin American economies dependent on the industrialized nations of Europe and North America?2. Latin American economies were dependent on Britain and the United States because they were the only countries that truly supported and recognized their independence. For a time, the rest of Europe tried to restore the Spanish Empire but the efforts were futile and they eventually acknowledged the Latin American countries as independent. As a result, Latin America was reliant upon Britain and the United States because they were the only countries to recognize their independence during the early transitional stages. Britain became Latin America's number one trading partner, which caused Latin America to be dependent on Britain and North America as their dominance hindered the development of Latin American industries.2
327605021What are the explanations offered for the relative under development of Latin America? Which explanation seems to be the most sufficient?3. There are two main theories that explain the relative underdevelopment of Latin America- the modernization theory and the slightly Marxist dependency theory. According to the modernization theory, any society may move towards a better future by following the earlier example of Western Europe. Modernization theory advocates for gradual change rather than radical improvement to be more effective. This theory, however, tended to disregard cultural difference internal class conflict, and internal struggles for power within a nation. The dependency theory offers a seemingly more valid explanation. The dependency theory explains the only reason that Europe and North America advanced was because they were able to exploit other countries and, by hindering the development of other countries, were able to further advance their own countries. The agricultural economies got increasingly poor as the industrialized nations with which they dealt would gain wealth. This is seen in more examples throughout history and thusly seems a more sufficient theory than the modernization theory.3
327605022Discuss the relationship of the United States with Latin America from the mid- 19th century to 1910.4. Following the American Civil War, American capitalists looked to Latin America for investment. The U.S. got involved with the Spanish-American war with the intent of opening the door to the sugar plantations in the Caribbean. This resulted in Cuba and Puerto Rico becoming dependent on the United States, and Columbia being reluctant to support U.S. intervention and plans in South America. Therefore, the U.S. backed Panama in its independence movements so as to get the rights to build a canal. This left Latin American countries even more critical of the United States and its intervention.4
