For anyone who got a 5 on the AP English exam...

Hi! Are there any people here who got a 5 on the exam who could give advice as to how/what to study? Are there any review materials you found helpful? I don't really know much about the structure of this exam. I heard it is easier than the APUSH exam, which I took last year. Thanks.

It's not exactly easier...there's just different things to study, and a different stlye for writing.

I can't really help you out on multiple choice- the best way to study for that is to get some old tests and just do the questions. Pretty soon you'll know what to work on...

For the essays, a really good rule of thumb is to read at least one Shakespear play, and a couple more of the "great works of literature" like Jane Eyre, The Scarlett Letter, Frankenstein, Brave New World, Catch-22, and so on. Your AP teacher should have a decent list for you.

I REALLY recomend reading a couple of Shakespeare's plays: probably at least one comedy and one tradgedy (Hamlet or MacBeth should be your best bet). I personally read Merchant of Venice and managed to apply it to one of my essay prompts- even though it wasn't on the list (I think this was a reason why I got a 5...). But stick to the more common plays. They're popular because they can be applied to many different situations and are a lot easier to interprit than the obscure ones.

To review for the test, practice making essay outlines, and get on to spark notes and remind yourself about the characters in the books you read. I also can't stress using your teacher as a reference enough- they should have access to all sorts of helpful thins, like old essay prompts.

Good luck!

*quick note about Shakespeare plays. If you aren't familiar with the old english of his time, there are books that have side-by-side translations for at least a few of his plays that might be helpful. Of course, it's always good to be able to understand it without the translations, but it can be challenging sometimes.

Thanks so much for the replies! I was also wondering if there are any good review books that you would recommend.

That's too bad- it must be a difference in teaching styles at your school and my old high school, because I got a five. Did you practice a bunch with old tests? Or work with analyzing and explicating the poetry and book excerpts at all? That's what we did a whole bunch of. Well, that and fastwrites. And when you said that you took both- do you also mean the AP Lang test as well?
