How is this class? I'm currently a sophomore and considering taking it next year. What is the basic premise of this class? Is the material very boring, interesting, neither, both?

I took this last year, and really belive that I got a lot out of it. It was in this class that I really learned how to analyze and critique authors, and look deeper into a story for a stronger point of veiw. This class really develops critique and analyzing methods, as well as making a person learn a lot about literary devices and all of their uses.
I know that I really enjoyed the class- but it also all depends on the teacher that you would get. I'd suggest talking to some juniors/seniors at your school who are taking this, and ask them about the teacher(s) that teach this, and how they feel they are doing, what they got on the AP exam (if they've taken it), etc.

Im finishing this class right now, and i love it. I taught me so much and vastly improved my skills as a writer and as a reader. And the subjects you cover, and the literature that we read made such an impact on my thinking. i actually took so much from this class, now im going to lie and say that it was a piece of cake or anything, i cant tell you how many sleepless nights i had writting long essays and analyzing essays and just writing in general, but to be honest it was worth every minute.
So i agree with xena talk to some jrs and seniors who are/did take it and get their feedback on the teachers, and if you have anyinterest in english or writing what so ever than seriously consider taking this class.

I agree with the two before me. You should talk to students who have taken AP before you. It really does depend on the teacher. I'm not really in AP. I'm in IB but my class is mixed in with an AP class so I really get the brunt of both worlds. In my experience its not much work, however reading is a big part of it. As well as writing. Junior year is when you take the exam so your teacher would probably put a lot of emphasis on AP timed writing and the multiple choice questions (those are kinda tricky, lol) But if you're good at writing I say go for it. I haven't had any problems so far-- I'm a junior. : ]

basically, it depends on the teacher. My teacher is great. I mean, sure essays and all that fun passage analyzing but .. you learn to write well and quickly. It's not that much work unless the teacher makes you read a lot. For me, that's not the case, maybe we'll read more when the tests finish. what there is a lot of are essays, in my case. consider the teachers at your school. Personally, i got the hard one, but i learned. the ones who got the easy teacher have to stay after school because they didn't learn all the other stuff earlier in the year - we did.

it depends on your teacher. Its main purpose is language analysis, the way its taught (whether its boring or not) depends on you teacher
The best thing about this class is you can get a 4 or 5 on the ap test w/o actually taking the class. Your focus is rhetoric, analysis, w/e. I found it pretty useless. You learn some stuff on fallacies, rhetorical terms, and stuff like that. My teacher was pretty interesting. Mainly we did vocab, learn what I just mentioned and did some grammar. We also wrote alot of essays such as research papers, memoirs, synthesis essays, rhetorical analysis, etc. However, your course may vary. And this course isn't necessarily a junior year course, we take it sophmore year at my school, yeah that totally makes me feel smart.
