Guitar Hero, anyone?

Supermegaultrajesus's picture

Thread title pretty much says it all. I'm pretty much addicted to Guitar Hero and have been for about a year and half now. I play on Expert mode, PS2 only, and I own all three games (GH1, GH2, and Rock the 80's).

I do realize that this is probably the nerdiest first post from anyone ever, but I'm strangely okay with that.

Man, I luv GH. That was probably the best idea Sony ever had :)

Finally someone like me who likes rock music but can't play any instrument can feel like a real rockstar :D

guitar hero saddens me.
ive been a guitarist, and musician, for over 5 years and i hear people talking more about guitar hero than real instruments, or music they actually enjoy. perhaps i am overreacting over a video game, but how many guitar-hero enthusiasts who "love dragonforce" have ever heard a song by them other than through the fire and flames? if i mention foghat at a party, how many people will say "hey, they have a song on guitar hero dont they?" is beating Free Bird on expert really the same thing as writing a piece of your own, and perhaps even performing it for a REAL live audience? does button pushing in front of the glowing screen really create a sense of what rockstar-ism is like? and now, geaser-rockers such as aerosmith are really cashing in on this social phenomena, since the next guitar hero will be aerosmith-themed with virtual representations of the band and over 30 of theyre hit songs. but like i said, perhaps i am overreacting to a video game. you tell me.

In and of itself, nothing really matters. What matters is that nothing is ever in and of itself.

Hey mattrodmusic, i know what your saying. i have been playing guitar for a while now and it really is annoying to hear people talking about how good they are at guitar when they mean guitar hero. it also sucks when i get really excited because i learned a new song like black magic woman or rock you like a hurricane and people think i mean on guitar hero, or that i only learned it because its on guitar hero. i think the problem is the people who take it too seriously. i have some friends who play but they talk about it like it is a game, unlike the idiots who take it way to seriously. i have played once or twice and admit that there is skill involved, it is just nothing like playing actual guitar. also, unless i am mistaken, several bands like dragonforce have seen an increase in popularity from these games. i guess i would say that its not the game but the people who take it seriously that sadden me.

all in all, it's just another brick in the wall...

yeah, im a drummer, (obviously), but i agree with you guys ferris and matt. i play guitar hero, but i know its a game and is in no way comparable to playing and learning real music. especially when factoring in stuff like knowing actual music reading, time-keeping, and having knowledge of rhythm.
and i find it sad as well when people talk about bands and only know the songs they have on guitar hero, and dont appreciate the rest of what the band has that is probably alot better.

do you guys think im sad for playing gutar hero?

Ferris Bueller's picture

no humanist, you are not sad for playing the game as long as you are one of those people who treats it like a game. i would say the same thing about Call of Duty. if you play the game and think, "hey i can go fight terrorists right now and i would be really good at it because i never die in Call of Duty" then you got some serious problems. oh yeah, and if you go around talking about bands you like because they are on guitar hero and you only know one or two songs by them because those are the song(s) on guitar hero, then you're and idiot!

all in all, it's just another brick in the wall...

Yea, gotta love guitar hero and Call of duty 2-4. Haven't played COD lately though (yes I am a girl who was once addicted to COD on the net xD). But yea all the points brought up are true. In no way, will this help you with actually learning guitar or music. Although it is easier to understand, having some music background as I play the flute and am in the marching band (where I spin flags or am in the colorguard.) Anyway, I do want to also try rock band because my brother tried it at a theatre party and says that it triumphs over GH. It is fun though and I'm sad to say I can play most songs on medium.
