How do you view the UN?

I have decided on investigating the opinions of the faithful followers of this site with questions regarding the UN:

Does it help or hinder the US?
What benefits has it given Americans?
Has it been successful in its original purpose? Etc.

Feel free to express your opinions on this topic and these questions.
Also suggest key points of interest or raise some of your own concerns.

I think this will be beneficial for all. Thanks for participating. -DJ

Lol UN is preety good but i hate the fact that un HAS NO POWER. like when countries dis respect UN, all UN can do is "write a very long angry letter". yea i understand the National Soverinity part of many people's arguments but consider this. If countries gave up a little bit of their freedom for the general world peace & general good, would not the world be better off?

This is the UN charter, The World should let the UN accomplish at least this:

PREAMBLE

WE THE PEOPLES OF THE UNITED NATIONS DETERMINED
to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind, and
to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small, and

to establish conditions under which justice and respect for the obligations arising from treaties and other sources of international law can be maintained, and

to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom,

AND FOR THESE ENDS
to practice tolerance and live together in peace with one another as good neighbours, and

to unite our strength to maintain international peace and security, and

to ensure, by the acceptance of principles and the institution of methods, that armed force shall not be used, save in the common interest, and

to employ international machinery for the promotion of the economic and social advancement of all peoples,

HAVE RESOLVED TO COMBINE OUR EFFORTS TO ACCOMPLISH THESE AIMS
Accordingly, our respective Governments, through representatives assembled in the city of San Francisco, who have exhibited their full powers found to be in good and due form, have agreed to the present Charter of the United Nations and do hereby establish an international organization to be known as the United Nations.

The dilemma with UN is that no country really wants an expansion of UN's power. Many people complain about the UN being powerless, but they themselves don't want a 'world government.' So they Leave the UN at an Advisory power which can get little done at some point of crucial historical junction.

The UN lacks any real power. Sure, they can advise the world, and if war is imminent, they could lean on the countries heading for war, but I seriously doubt it would have any real effect. (Points at Iraq) The UN does need more power, but the nations of the world have a legitimate fear of giving them any more power, because with military strength at his/her disposal, and the allegiance of a handful of countries, the General Secretary of the United Nations could conceivably become the ruler of the world. It's basically the paranoia of world leaders controlling their policies, but in this case it is justified. Ultimately, the United Nations has failed completely. It has no major effects on U.S. policy, or that of any other nation.
