Well Its time to get a graphing calculator. Im taking Pre-Calc and Algebra II this year and plan on taking AP Calculus BC and Physics C and Chemistry so will a TI-84+ get me through those? Or will I need something more like a TI-89

Also will the TI-89 make life easier enough in the AP Classes to justify 30$ more?

I think you should be fine with a TI-84+. I personally love my TI-89 titanium, but that's more because I upgraded from a TI-30x (scientific if you're wondering- always borrowed a calc for tests and such) directly to it. I've never actually seen a TI-84, but looking at the specs it does everything you'll need- integrals, derivatives, solve function (my personal favorite), etc. Plus it comes in pretty colors ^.^

I should probably also mention that the TI-89 series runs on a different menu system than the TI-83's. I'm not sure about the TI-84's but it take a bit to get used to where everything is on the TI-89 and TI-89 titanium.

I too am coming from the TI-30x scientific calculator. Sucks because I only got 2 months to use it since I lost my Sharp D.A.L

Do you have any experience with HP calculators or RPN?

I like continuity in my calculators, so I spend the extra 2-3 bucks to get the TI series. Sorry, but I've never used any other brand, not even as a loaner o.0

I do suggest you keep your scientific one for a while- I find it comes in handy for those simple equations you don't want to have to shell out your big calculator for. Also, once you get to college, they don't like you using graphing ones...

So ti-84 plus silver not needed?

Not unless you want the interchangable face-plates/slide cases and more RAM to upload even more apps (games mostly....). There's still plenty of room to add stuff on a TI-84 plus, but the silver edition is like the 'fun calculator'.

The menu of the TI-84 plus is exactly the same as the TI-83. Personally I love my TI-84 plus. It has saved my butt in Chemistry (SigFig Function!), gotten me through Physics Honors and is getting me through Trig Honors. Plus, our Calc teacher (also teaches Algebra II) sings its praises daily. It should easliy get you through your chosen classes.

The only other brand I've dealt with is Casio. Good as a Scientific calculator, but the graphing features are confusing.

I have a TI-84 Plus Silver Edition....I love it.
I had a Casio, but none of my teachers knew anything about using it. Also, they always demonstrated how to do everything on the TI-83/84 calculators so it became essential. One more thing: a TI calculator is ESSENTIAL if you plan to take AP Stat. Everything is just learning calc. functions....

yea, TI-89 is awesome, if you get the hang of it... people say you are not allowed to use it on certain exams though... but on the package it says you can... so i have no idea, but I have one and I love it!
