What are your views on the death penalty?

In one of my calsses we had a discussion about our views on the death penalty and where we stood with it and why. We had to pick sides and try to convince other people to come over to which ever side you were in favor of at the moment. This went on the whole calss and I wondered what everyone here had to say about it.

I am personally in favor of the death penalty depending on the crime. If the court believes that that person should have the death penalty as a punishment and the jury agrees on it than I think it should happen. I do wish we could get rid of it but would the tax payers be willing to pay more money to keep a criminal in jail for the rest of their life? Someone said we are one of the few countries that still have the death penalty. I don't know how true that information is but it's just mind boggling! The amount of people going to jail and what not has been increasing a bit lately. I think if we keep the death penalty people may fear the consequences and possibly this could help decrease crim rates?? haha I don't know. Just a thought :]

I believe that the death penalty is a horrible horrible punishment...I mean yeah crimes can sometimes be completely unexplainable and tragic..but that person should still be able to live through their days and regret on what they did...there are many alternative punishments that can be much more acceptable than the death penalty...and plus, if the death penalty was so effective than it would have stopped the crime rates by now; yet, the crimes have increased not decreased in the past few years or so...

I hope I made sense...

well i understand where your coming from bebe, but not all people feel regret or remorse. some people are animals. and i beleive that those people..well..hmm. okay idk, i actually cant make up my mind on this one because i dont think beleiving in the death penalty is really in accordance with my religion, but idk, there are just some people out there who do things considered beyond horrible, the verdict is questionable.

It's so tough. I support it and yet I don't. It's so confusing. I still want that person to learn a lesson but killing them just kind of stops that process ya know? But what about thoes people who feel no guilt like 2451354Drummer said (haha didn't feel like looking up at the numbers). I guess we can say im straddling the line then...

i once heard: why do we kill people who kill people to show people that killing people is wrong?

also there are those cases where the victim's family gets to talk to the person who committed the crime and they forgive the person and the person actually understands what a horrible thing they did to the family, so it all works out without anyone else getting killed. that's what i like to hope for.

this is a really controversial issue, because there are too many easy points you can take on it, like what you said nymcha which would be like 2 wrongs dont make a right, and then there are cases where people are just vile and they dont learn anything. i guess when it boils down to it though, you have to determine the nature of the criminal, does he feel remorse? or does he want to kill again?

I think that the death penalty is not a bad punishment. I know that seems somewhat weird and freaky, but I mean if there was someone who was in the wrong (and I mean big time) then I think that they deserve the death penalty. When I say death penalty I mean something like this: you hear about a child abduction or rape or something of that sort. Does that not put a damper on you and society? Who is brave enough to go out and hurt a child in that kind of manner and think that what that person just did gives them pleasure? No child should go through something like that in which it will effect the rest of their lives. If you were the child, wouldn't you want that person that harmed you to die? I mean, honestly....

idk..i kinda hear what MRHSgirl is saying..some people do really bad stuff, and thats easy to acknowledge, but what im afraid of is advocating the execution of people..because is that not so much different from murder?
