Forign Policy of the time: McCarthyism: "damn those communists." and
Containment: "if we can contain communism and stop it from spreading, it will eventually bring about the end of Communism"
The US after WWII (because of the USSR) knew that commumists COULD fight and were able to be powerful. This is what drove the idea of McCarthyism, americans were REALLY afraid that communists would take over the world.
China had the communist uprising, im not explaining that you can figure that one out and the mainland portion of it fell to communism. This made americans REALLY afraid taht other countries might fall (due to their Domino Theory) to communism.
This is why they wanted to enter Vietnam, to stop the spread of Communism (see their containment policy?)
ultimately the vietnam effort failed and all of Vietnam became communist. Neighboring countries Cambodia, Korea, and one other country (maybe begins w/ a L?) fell to communism. that was the HUGE failure of american foreign policy in that time period.
Failures: China, Vietnam, Korea, Cambodia, Etc. countries falling to Communism
succuess: hm. i guess the fall of the USSR and the rise of Russia could be considered a succuess, along with the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989. Other than that, no direct successes, mostly failures. So i geuss if you wanted a thesis to it it would be something like this:
"The American foreign policy of containment in the period 1945-1981 appealed to Americans and had few successes, but the Containment policy ultimately failed."

something like that, id ont know. i just wrote an essay about 2 weeks ago, something like: "Evaluate the American Containment Policy in Asia between __ and __" so its kinda similar...
i hoped that helped? heh i almost wrote an essay for ya, but it helped me b/c it helps with studying.
good luck w/ the AP test

To understand the war in Vietnam, you need to understand the history of that country. Unfortunately, you can't learn that in an American school.
I read what I was not taught in school and was shocked at how similiar their fight for freedom was to the US fight for freedom.
The following website is created by the US Army. They paid researchers to get information on every country. This is the Vietnam page.
