ok so the question is....to what extent did the natural enviornment shape the development of the west beyond the mississippi and the lives of those who lived and settled there? how important were the other factors?

Darn. I'm late... But this is what I would had told you:
Considering how the "wild west" is one of my least favorite topic, I wouldn't know much. What I do know is that the people had to learn to use massive irrigation, the people in the midwest build sod houses due to the stubbornly hard topsoil, and I suppose the relatively nice climate in Cali would encourage farming.
