it depends on who you talk to, two diferent versions occur, i have to write a 5 paragraph essay on the same question. Because he brought disease, enslaved the native people and ruined their life, he is considered a villian. But because he found the new world; a place to grow sugar, tobacco, and silk; many consider him a hero. i personally think of him both. To all discoveries comes drawbacks

Columbus was a Villan, just look he came to the west Indies, killed a whole ethnic group of Indians who lived on those islands, later on he enslaved a large number of them and used them for various purposes including as sex slaves he would use to reward his men and his subordinates
However, I recommend if you want to have a clear view of Columbus and who he was I recommend reading the book "Lies My Teacher Told Me"- by an author named Lowen ( I'm not sure if thats the right spelling) his book gives a better persepective on this issue and more interesting facts and perspectives( not shown necessarily in History Books) which could be used in future essay's or projects.

Ps. This book can be found at Barnes & Noble
