Battle of New Orleans - Although it was fought two weeks after the Treaty of Ghent, General Andrew Jackson's victory over the British at New Orleans in January 1815 convinced many Americans, inattentive to chronology, that the United States had won the War of 1812 on the battlefield. Jackson became a celebrated national hero. The victory ended any British hopes of gaining control of the lower Mississippi River Valley.
