The sectional crisis highlighted the difference between the north and south. For example the south relied heavily on exportation of cotten, and the north was mainly manufacturing. The civil war was a combination of things with the overt cause being slavery. The idea of slavery expanding west into the frontier is highly contested between the north and south because of the obvious reasons that the south wanted slavery to expand and the north did not. The social difference were simply that the southerners lived on farms and relied on slave labor and the northerners lived in cities and worked in factories.
