Colonial regions question?!?!

when they use the term colonial regions are they referring to each specific colony (Massachusetts Bay, Virginia etc.) or are they reffering to groups (South, New England etc.)? If they are reffering to groups, how many groups are there? Please Help!!!

There are many ways to group the three colonies into regions, but the "Big Three" (wait until you get to World War II, you'll understand the reference) are South (Georgia, Carolinas, Virginia, Maryland); Middle (Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York); New England (Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire).
