We have to do a Though Provker ? and it is about how to compare and contrast how the American colonies were unified (Ways they were, ways they weren't)
Then we have to write a 3 paragraph essay, taking a postion on whether we think they are unified or not,and why
HELP ME
Does anyone have any ideas I can use...On both sides?
If you are talking about the colonies as a whole being unified, I would look into the following things:
Great Awakening: provided religious unity for the colonies...giving them something that they all had in common.
"Salutary Neglect": All of the colonies were being neglected by the British's focus on mercantilism rather than governing the colonists effectively. (I believe Walpole was the person behind the concept of "salutary neglect.")
French and Indian War: All colonists wanted to expand westward to further their chances for success:
Proclamation Line of 1763 ( not positive on year...): served as a boundary line between colonists and indians...prevented colonists from westward expansion beyond the Appalachians.
Benjamin Franklin's Albany Plan: first major attempt to unify for a colonial cause. "Join or Die" was the catch phrase. Basically, Franklin believed that if all of the colonists joined together, they could more successfully fight against the French and Indians.
Paxton Boys and Regulators are good examples of colonists coming together.
Look into mob rule...a concept somewhat present during the protests at the Boston Massacre.
All of these things are possible supports for growing colonial unity over time...
Good Luck, and I hope this helps...
