Conformity in the Fifties Essay

It's that time again...

"To what extent did the decade of the 1950s deserve its reputation as an age of political, social and cultural conformity?"

I'm thinking McCarthyism and Brown v. Board of education for political.
Civil Rights for social.
and Consumerism for cultural?

Seems awfully vague to me would like some suggestions.
Please and Thank you!

'We will walk on our own feet; we will work with our own hands; we will speak our own minds.'

Ralph Waldo Emerson,
"The American Scholar," 1837
