I first read the question, circle and underline keywords, then I assess all the knowledge I know about it and write my thesis statement. Then I write an outline using categories that cover the important parts of the question. After I finished writing an outline of all the knowledge I can recall about the question, I look at the documents. This is helpful because a DBQ should be 50% outside knowledge and 50% document based.

After that I start reading the documents, underlining, highlighting, and making comments about each document. It's good to have an opinion about your documents when writing your essay. For example, if you're mentioning something from a document, you might want to add something along the lines of: however, this view is biased in favor of the Democrats because blahblahblah.

Then, I use my outline to "sprinkle in" the documents appropriately. Afterwards, I write my essay, using my outline as a guide, and remember to write the most relevant and most important facts first.

It helps a lot if you think thoroughly about what you have to say and don't waste any time staring into blank space.

thank you very much. I needed the help. THE TEST is coming soon and i can do a dbq, just not very fast. our teasher gave us the S.R.I.T.E thing. It helps, but not in the speed category or in the fact that sometimes i only have two out of the letters i need for a half way decent thesis
