I'm not sure what about your particular essay wasn't strong, but here's a few things that are often problem areas...

  1. Thesis - you need a clear thesis statement that correctly outlines the point of your paper. It should appear at the end of your introduction paragraph

  2. Main points - the 2-3 (4 if you're really ambitious, I never did that many though) points that you're grouping your argument into. Usually it's pretty easy to get this from the question (i.e. "list economic, political, and social reasons why _____ happened")

  3. Historical facts - mostly in the form of outside information. Drop some names, name some dates, date some events, just show that you know what you're talking about and make sure you have the correct info!

  4. Explanation - It's not enough to just put down facts, you need to explain how they're significant to your essay. Make sure you take a line to explain why that fact was important to your thesis.

  5. Structure - this is more of an English thing, but make sure you seperate your points correctly. Don't have your economic examples in with the social paragraph, or your social info in with the political info. And remember, your thesis is your guide - your essay MUST go in the order your thesis says

  6. Sentence Variety - okay, so all the ones before this were technical things. Now comes the creative part. You need to mix up your sentence structure ocasionally, make your essay interesting to read, or at least less boring. Don't start off each sentence "This happened....After that this happened.....They caused this.....*repeat*". Spice it up.

  7. Flow - another point that's more of a style thing. Make sure your essay flows. If it feels like it's going from one topic to another with no connection or warning, it tends to be to your disadvantage. Add a simple transitive sentence (i.e. "The political effects weren't the only thing affecting the nation, economic problems also led to some interesting changes.") to the end of your paragraph and it should be a simple solution. As you practice it'll be easier to do.

Okay, that should be a good start. Let me know if you have anymore questions or if you want some more specific help.
