Does anybody know the proper way to tie in quotes for the DBQ? I have heard to quote directly and never to quote directly.... Also is (Doc A) the only way to site the documents?

I quote directly & that's never gotten me marked down or anything so yeah...and I've been told by my teacher to site (Doc A) or whatever & I haven't seen any different in any other essays that I've read from other students or classes
That's the way I've always done it. Although, I think you can get away with paraphrasing as long as you cite at the end. I'm pretty sure I've done that a few times...

You can also cite Document A by saying "Document A states that blah blah blah." Just don't actually quote the doc, that's not a good stategy.

I think that quoting directly works so long as you analyze the quote and explain how it fits in with your topic.

Come to think of it, that makes sense. Our teacher has beaten it into our heads to not actually quote the docs, so I'm brainwashed in a sense. We'll see how the DBQ I'm writing tomorrow goes over :)

in all my DBQs i quote directly and then prove how that quote or document flows in with my outside knowledge---OUTSIDE KNOWLEDGE---most important...
My teacher says we should never, ever use direct quotes from the document. He says that the AP people know what the documents say and that we shouldn't use quotes to cushion our explanations when we can just dive in instead.
I don't know if it really matters that much, but his students usually get fours or fives on the exam, so I'm not going to argue.
