Slavery and the Civil War

I don't even know where to start on this DBQ. My teacher gave us a thesis statement that we could use but I lost it :( . If someone could just give me a couple of things to talk about in my essay that would be helpful. No need to be specific, I know a ton about slavery and the civil war but I'm having trouble applying my knowledge. Here's the question:

"Recent groups, for a variety of reasons, have charged that slavery was not an overriding cause in bringing about the Civil War, rather that it was one of many equal issues. Examine this concept in light of the documents presented here and your own knowledge of US History. Would contemporaries advocate that the issue of slavery was a primary cause of the Civil War?"

Thanks everyone.
PS: I'd be glad to help any of you with questions you may have, if I can.

Okay, I have no idea what kind of documents you have. All I know pretaining to the subject is that reform movements started protesting the morality of slavery, but the south looked at it as an economic necessity. And they didn't like Lincoln...said they would seceed if he became president. Followed through too if I'm not mistaken ;) . Although Lincoln was never truly for abolition. He even said so during his election. But over all, slavery was the main cause of the civil war.

P.S. That's what you're supposed to do...recieve help when you need it and give help when you can!

You can also write (if you want) that slavery was not the primary reason the Civil War occurred but because the Southern states wanted a revision of the Constitution - so maybe you can anaylze that Constitution was the cause of Civil War? And probably add John Calhoun's proposal of having two presidents: south and north...

And add the rights of states too...

The below statement is false.
The above statement is true.

Hadn't thought of that...

That's also a good alternative. I guess all the questions for AP are like that though, you can go either way so long as you can justify it.

The civil war was inevitable due to the problems between the North and the South. If it was not for the whole slavery issue the war mght not have been caused by this issue but it would have still happen.
